Programs

Both Lenoir County Family Literacy and the Greene County Lucy Hart Hill Family Literacy are comprehensive programs designed to help families break the intergenerational cycle of illiteracy and poverty. Partnership funds help support the great work of these two programs.

Eligible participants for the programs are parents who live in Lenoir and Greene Counties, have children ages one through seven, have not completed high school and do not have a diploma. The programs also serve local parents who do not speak English and have children ages one through seven.

The Family Literacy programs consist of five components:

bullet
Adult EducationQualified teachers work with parents to meet the parent's educational goals. These goals include earning a General Education Degree (GED), completing an ESL (English as a Second Language) program, or improving basic skills in reading and math
bullet
Parent TimeAn instructor and parents meet to discuss child raising issues and child development. Parents develop positive adult relationships with other participants as well as work toward building stronger families
bullet
Early Childhood EducationDevelopmentally appropriate activities and experiences are made available to the children in a supportive child care and/or preschool classroom.
bullet
Parent and Child Interaction- A period of time where parents and children share experiences such as learning new songs, words and concepts, as well as playing together. This all takes place in the child's classroom.
bullet
Home-Based InstructionInstructors from the Family Literacy Program visit each family's home once a month to teach the parent ways to educate their child in the home environment. Parenting skills specific to the individual are also discussed.

These programs seek to give parents and children a brighter future and we have seen remarkable results.
